This is really disturbing. I just don’t know what to say. Don’t know whom to blame because everyone is at fault, except the girl who got molested. It was scary to watch the video which was showed by some news channels again and again about the Guwahati girl being molested.
You know when these kinds of things happen we all start to discuss intensely, hold candle light protests, the minister will say something and the issue dies down. We need to get to the source of the problem. It’s the mentality of men and the society at large that needs to change. Unless their thinking changes, these things will happen in a country like India. There is no way you can stop these.
The problem with some men is that they can’t see a girl being equal to them or better than them. It really hurts their ego. So these men have to be taught as to how to behave with girls and that they need to start accepting that things are changing for the better.
I want to ask one simple question, if girls/women care so much about these issues, why are they not uniting against this, why are they being silent about it. Here I am referring to all the girls/women who are sisters or mothers of those guys who committed this crime. Why are they not coming forward to take a stand? You know in one village, a group of women from different families came together to stop selling or distribution of alcohol in their village. They succeeded in it as their husbands use to beat them every day after consuming alcohol.
Now how we gonna change the thinking of men and the society. Believe me it will take years to change it. But somewhere we need to start. This is where the importance of education and schooling comes into picture. Right from day one it is the responsibility of the teachers to teach students the importance of equality among boys and girls and the respect for each other. This is so very crucial because that is where their thinking starts. Our education system needs to tell girls that against molestation every man deserves punishment no matter whether they are their dads or brothers or any other relative.
Recently in Mumbai a guy who tried to rescue the girls from the molester was killed on the spot. So it is important that the onlookers who want to help will have proper security from the authority and most importantly from the general public. Seeing the guy getting killed and considering our pathetic judicial system, there is no chance of any onlooker coming to the rescue as he or she will be worried about his or her personal safety and security.
Coming back to the Guwahati incident, I am worried as to why a 16 year old girl went to a bar alone at night. I heard on TV from a lady who was from Guwahati that this is not the first time this is happening and that these things have happened pretty regularly it seems. So considering this, the 16 year old girl should have taken some guy friend or any other precautions just for her safety. I am not blaming her for going to a bar at night but it is always better to take precautions than feel sorry later. No matter whatever is the situation, one should not compromise on one’s safety.
This is a serious problem and we all need to acknowledge it, most importantly the authorities. The Government of India should accept and acknowledge that molestation is a national problem. According to me, this is a bigger problem than terrorism. Because in terrorism people die once, but because of molestation, girls/women die every day and at every single minute. If a nation doesn’t respect its women then it just falls apart. Signing off with a hope that things will change for the better.
PS: A news channel mentioned the girl's age as 16 years. But read an article in newspaper where her age was mentioned as 17 years. A blogger friend below has mentioned that her age is 18 years, so not sure what is her correct age.
